This book follows the fortunes of Christopher Teesdale during the years 1854 and 1855. During the Crimean War he was posted as ADC to General Williams – Her Majesty Queen Victoria's Commissioner in Eastern Turkey. Aged 22 years at the time, he went on to play a pivotal role in the defence of Kars in Eastern Turkey. As a result of his actions on September 29th 1855 he was awarded the Victoria Cross. On the final capitulation of Kars he was taken captive to Russia – and ended up having an audience in St. Petersburg with Czar Nicholas, Autocrat de toutes les Russies, or – as Tennyson described him – 'that o'ergrown barbarian of the East'! Teesdale later became Equerry to HRH Prince of Wales.
